The Cathedrals Main Altar

The Cathedrals Main Altar This is a closer view of the Cathedrals Main Altar. During the Episcopate of Bishop John Power II, the high vaulted ceiling was elaborately decorated. In 1881, the present marble High Altar and Reredos were installed, though the Altar incorporates the front of its predecessor of 1854. The impressive Baldachino supported by five Corinthian columns with gilt capitals "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" was erected over the Altar.

After the Second Vatican Council in the late 60s, there were many further changes made to the Cathedrals appearance. Over the years, additions and modifications continued to be made to the inside of the Cathedral.

Also seen in this picture, The Bishops Chair (seen on the far left), which was designed by Goldie & Sons of London in 1883.
